As costs of electricity continue to rise in the Corpus Christi area, reducing the amount of electricity that you use may be the only way to keep your bills at a reasonable level. One of the easiest ways to reduce your electricity usage is to replace your older incandescent light bulbs with newer, energy-efficient versions. There are several options to choose from, and the following information will explain how each of these lights can save you money using newer technologies:

Energy-Efficient Incandescent Halogen Bulbs

These lights use similar technology to traditional light bulbs, with both including a filament. In these bulbs, however, the filament is encased in its own miniature capsule, surrounded by a halogen gas that slows the degradation of the filament and allows it to maintain a higher temperature during operation. Due to the higher temperature, 25 percent less electricity is required to produce the same amount of light. Halogen bulbs are the least efficient of the newer technologies, and should only be used where necessary, such as to replace appliance bulbs or for fixtures that can be dimmed.

Compact Fluorescent

Also known as CFL’s, these are smaller versions of the long tube-type fluorescent lights that have been around for a long time. Compared to standard bulbs, they require 75 percent less electricity for the same light output, and they have a much longer lifespan, with some lasting 10 times as long as incandescents. CFLs tend to work poorly in cold weather, however, and they can take a few minutes to reach full light output. Special versions are available for dimmable fixtures.

LED Bulbs

The most expensive of the new technologies, LED bulbs are made of small arrays of white light-emitting diodes, similar to the colored ones used as indicators in many electronics. They require up to 80 percent less energy than incandescent bulbs, and can last up to 25 times longer. New manufacturing techniques are both improving the quality of the lights and reducing the prices.
