Air filters help keep your indoor air clean and contribute to cooling system performance. Here are answers to the top five questions about air conditioner filters.

  1. Why should I change my air filter?
As filters get dirty, they lose the ability to remove particulates such as dust, pollen and mold. Changing air filters regularly ensures that your indoor air is as clean as possible. Higher-grade filters known as high-efficiency particulate air filters (HEPA) can remove germs, bacteria and other disease-causing microorganisms from your air. Dirty filters can no longer remove them, which increases the chance they’ll return to your indoor air.
  2. Where is the air filter located?
Where does the air conditioner filter go? Usually, filters are held in a slot near the air handler, somewhere within the airflow pathway of the system. Look for a large box containing the air distribution fans and motor are located.
  3. What kind of filter should I use?
Standard fiberglass filters offer adequate filtration, but higher-efficiency filters with pleated cloth media provide even better ability to trap and hold particulates. Filter efficiency is measured with a minimum eEfficiency reporting value (MERV) rating, which generally runs from 1 to 16 for standard filters. A filter with a MERV of 8 to 11 should be adequate for most home applications. The size of the filter you need will depend on the type of air conditioner you have. Check your owner’s manual for information on filter size.
  4. Is the highest efficiency filter always the best?
As efficiency increases, filters become thicker and more dense. These types of filters can restrict airflow within the system, which could lead to A/C malfunctions or breakdowns. Make sure your A/C unit’s airflow is strong enough to work with a high-MERV filter before installing one.
  5. How often should I replace my Air filter?
Air filters should be checked at least once a month. If they’re dirty or clogged, they should be changed immediately. Replace the filter every three months at a minimum.
