When your air conditioner stops running in the Corpus Christi area, it’s a cause for concern at the very least, and may be potentially dangerous to those whose health is vulnerable to the adverse effects of the hot and humid summer weather that’s the norm for our area. Before you call the professionals, however, troubleshooting common A/C problems may allow you to get the system running again yourself, saving time and frustration, not to mention the cost of a service call.
Troubleshooting Checklist for Common A/C Problems:
Outdoor Unit Not Operating: Check the power to the system at the main electrical panel for your home, as well as any separate panels for the A/C itself. Reset any breakers that are tripped, and if thereĀ are none, turn the breakers off for a few minutes, then back on. Replace any blown fuses. If the outdoor unit still does not come on, double-check the thermostat setting and reset any other safety systems, such as the high-pressure switch on the compressor. Call a professional if these methods do not work, as there may be damage to the compressor or its start-capacitor.
Poor Cooling: Check the condition of the air filter and the evaporator coil. If the coil is dirty, carefully clean it with a soft-bristle brush and vacuum, if possible. If the filter is dirty, replace or clean it. Also check the air ducts and registers for blockages that may inhibit air flow and clean them, if necessary.
No Cooling At All: Clean the evaporator coil, and if that doesn’t work, check the condenser coil outside. Clean the area around the condenser of weeds and debris, making sure it can get good airflow, and remove dirt, leaves and other debris from the condenser coil itself, using a commercially available A/C cleaning solution, if necessary.
A/C Cycles On and Off: Clean the indoor and outdoor coils, and make sure the air ducts and grilles are free of obstructions.
If these suggestions for troubleshooting common A/C problems do not help, the problem may require a professional’s knowledge and skill. Contact our technicians at Bodine-Scott Air Conditioning Co. for an appointment in the Corpus Christi area today.
